The Magic Globe of Ta Prohm
ABCs and Rice differs from most NGO schools in Siem Reap, Cambodia. In addition to providing a much-needed free education in English and Khmer, they offer various food programs to nourish the children’s bodies as well as their minds. ABCs currently assists over 160 students and their families, through food and education.
I was approached with an opportunity to be a part of a drive within Australia to help out raising funds for this awesome school. This project was an exciting creative drive to showcase the incredible people in the school and bring the community together. Melbourne educator, musician and composer Dermot Tutty wrote a whimsical musical production and directed the students and teachers to create a fun, upbeat show. The show was adapted into a manuscript for a picture book and there I enter. A team of artists, led by Samuel Ross, worked tirelessly to transform some simple photos of the students into stimulating images for The Magic Globe of Ta Prohm. For the majority of the students, this story book will be the first they own. I was enlisted to co-illustrate and composite the book which would eventually go on sale and become a fundraising focus for ABCs and Rice.
What's the book about? The storyline revolves around the close relationship of a group of magical animals - after the classes of the students of the school: Lion, Eagle, Monkey and Badger - with the children of Siem Reap. When magic scatters the children's watchful companions during a party, they use a Magic Globe from the Temple of Ta Prohm to find and rescue the animals.
